Step 1 - Getting A Google Account

Introduction

The first thing that you have to have to work along with your wiki is a Google account. If you don't already have a Google account, you will need to set one up.

Use the format -
eagleviewfirstinitiallastname

Step 2 - Opening A PB Works Account

www.pbworks.com

A wiki is a simple-formatted website that is that uses an editor that is very similar to that of MS Word. You will be able to post all of your assignments/activities, videos and links, images, and other information on your wiki for your students to access.

Sign up at www.pbworks.com to create your wiki.

Step 3 - Creating A Home Page

Your Home Page page is where the link that will appear on our school website will land your students when they click on your name on that website.

Your Home Page page can include some information about you, like where you are from originally, names of others in your family members who teach or work in Onion Lake, where and what you have taught before, and maybe some personal interests (please be careful about the truly personal information you share here!!)

Make sure that you include some instructions on what the students are supposed to do when they start on your Home Page (i.e. "Click on the page in the "Navigator" window on the right side of your screen that has the name of the class that you are taking from me.)

Step 4 - Creating Class Pages

Everything happens in the Pages and Files tab in the top left of your screen.

Adding A Video To Your Wiki

Instead of having your students search for videos on a general topic, you may decide to have them view a specific video that you have chosen. It is very easy to make this happen on a wiki page. This video uses YouTube as an example. If you are interested in uploading your own videos to your wiki, let me know and I can add a video for that as well.

Sharing A Website Address In A Wiki Page

Remember, you could just provide your students with the web address copied and pasted into a wiki page, but I've found that dressing it up a bit with "Click on the image for more information." gets a better reaction from the students. The image gets them thinking.

Wiki - Final Step!

  1. Highlight and copy the web address of your wiki's Home Page.
  2. Send an email to b.hammer.eagle@gmail.com and mrstrumecki@gmail.com with your name and the address posted in the body of the email.
Now, start having fun preparing your wiki!
